Your Unique Role

As a Plastics Technician within the Thermoplastic Laboratory, you will be responsible for supporting the long-term research and development efforts for Additive and specialty colorant development work. You will conduct QC products using a variety of testing equipment and you will make decisions and suggestions regarding next steps in product disposition.

 

Additionally, you will:

  • Operate Injection Molding, Blow Molding, Film Extrusion Line, Single & Twin Screw Extruders, Pulverizes, Granulators, Drying Equipment, and other polymer processing equipment
  • Conduct a variety of plastics testing including thermal analysis, physical properties, barrier properties, color, and appearance
  • Conduct Raw Material evaluations on colorants, additives and polymers and use good judgment to determine if they are acceptable
  • Utilize color computer applications for quality control, formula predictions and corrections
  • Learn basic formulation techniques and color match to a balanced formula
  • Perform Bottle Failure Analysis Test for opaque blow molded bottles
  • Learn spectral curves and how to identify colorants

Seeking a Candidate With:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma, with college chemistry and material science classes preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of working experience in plastics (extrusion, injection molding, compounding, formulating, QC, manufacturing, etc.)
  • Understands the performance and process differences between various polymers and their additives
  • Understand Chemical Index numbers of colorants
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements of plastic materials and additives
  • Ability to understand and execute a test plan and drive a project through to completion
  • Must have good mechanical skills
  • Ability to work under pressure as well as within tight deadlines
  • Must be proficient at operating a variety of physical testing and light analytical equipment including spectrophotometers, melt flow apparatus, microscopes, micrometers, density, and various scales
  • Must be fluent in Excel, Word, X-Rite, Data Color, and other laboratory instrument software
