Your Unique Role

As a Research & Development Scientist - Color within the Thermoplastic Laboratory, you will be responsible for conducting research and managing projects related to developing appearance and functionality in plastics applications. You will also be responsible for new product development with special emphasis on the latest technology in polymers and additives for plastics, polymer testing, and instrument technology. Operate all processing equipment including mixers, milling equipment, extruders, compounders, injection molders, blow molders, filtration and cast film lines.


Additionally, you will:

  • Understand and interpret color spectrum profiles for color matching and colorant identification
  • Positively lead and manage multiple global plastics projects
  • Deliver new products for successful growth of plastics market
  • Work independently on projects and executes to completion and commercialization
  • Conduct formulation and process development studies (ANOVA, mixture design) to identify significant impact variables, interpret test results including statistical analysis, and write technical reports and papers
  • Lead efforts to search and file patents in relation to new plastics products or developments
  • Perform prior art searches to understand if new discoveries are unique, novel, and patentable

Seeking a Candidate With:

  • BS in Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer or Material Science; Masters preferred, PhD desirable
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of thermoplastics, plastic additives, and pigments
  • Material exposure to both engineering and commodity polymers
  • Broad knowledge of polymer chemistry, properties, blends/alloys, and principles of polymerization
  • In-depth knowledge and hand on experience in the fundamentals of thermoplastics processing
  • Experience in plastic masterbatch formulation using colorants, additives, fillers, and reinforcements
  • Thorough knowledge of FDA and EU food regulations related to packaging materials
  • Familiarity with plastics testing, characterization, and analytical analysis techniques
  • Experience in color theory, measurement and instrumentation and the ability to explain color concepts including special effects and mass coloration
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate innovative concepts, generate prototypes, conduct pilot trials, and scale up to manufacturing
